As a developer , I m not really good in server admin, for the past one year I been trying my best to learn but I still don’t really like it. Shared hosting is not suitable for developer since there are many restriction and you always affected by the users on the same server ( unless something like Webfaction , dedicated memory for share hosting) , managed VPS is quite expensive because most of the time they are forcing you to use a control panel in order for them to offer manage hosting, but after you install a control panel , more resources are required, your tiny VPS might need to upgrade again to run smoothly, that’s why it can cost a bomb.

The only choice I have is to pick up some basic server admin skill and host up on Linode , but what I really prefer is some hosting that is simple , budget , dedicated resource, easy to scale and no need to manage the server. I use to think Media Temple’s Grid Hosting might be what I need , but it seem like it doesn’t really meet the expectation. I always wish that one day maybe Heroku or Google App Engine can finally support PHP and  I can no need to worry about server anymore.

But not any more , there are 3 Cloud Platform for PHP now.

I mention this before documentation / help file will be useful for developer friendly host , in fact some time it become one of the benchmark for hosting, Linode have some nice VPS offer , what they lack of are these help file and documentation, although there are not many contents yet compare to slicehost’s articles , but i believe this is a great start for Linode, kudos to the Linode Team.

The first time i heard about them is because @FireHost added me on twitter, but during that time might be because i tweet some hosting related issue on my twitter, that’s why quite a few hosting twitter account added me. The Second time i heard about FireHost are still from twitter, but this time someone mention FireHost have a very interesting website.

What make FireHost website so interesting ? it should be the starting animation on the website, personally i think this idea are quite interesting, having “marvel” feel. Other then the interesting website, they have an interesting blog too, this is the second corporate blog that impress me, the first one will be pingdom official blog.

lastly about pricing , for my current stage , i don’t think i m able to afford their pricing, but if they are really that good in security, that pricing is consider reasonable , share with me if you have testimonial on FireHost.

Firstly , Starting from 4th June , all Media Temple DV series server will be getting extra RAM , to be accurate the users are getting x2 of what they use to have, which mean the entry level DV Base is not longer 256MB RAM , it will be 512MB Ram by default. This is a good news and it help Media Temple DV server to stay competitive.

Third, if you getting any DV server and pay for one year , you only need to spend 10 month price,  the last 2 month will be free.

A DV base server which have 512mb Ram original cost you $50 monthly, now if you pay it one shot for 1 year ($500 ) + using the promo code for getting 20% discount ($400 ) divide by 12 month, the dv will only cost you $33.33 monthly only, which is a very good deal !

One thing to take note is these are unmanaged server/vps , you might need to get your hand dirty on system admin , but there are quite complete knowledgebase for you. I think this should be a good upgrade for those GS account user ?

Currently HostMonk only provide dedicated and vps hosting related comparison, but share hosting and cloud hosting will be coming soon, among these 4 type of hosting, i think share hosting comparison should be most headache , i wonder how HostMonk going to sort this out.

I like the design and interface , it looks clean and neat, compare to some of the hosting package website out there, which sidebar full with different hosting company ads, HostMonk give me more comfortable feel if i really want to choose a hosting package through the comparison, but what i think it should added on some mashup, maybe google search result , twitter search result and WHT forum result toward these hosting company/hosting package, so that user can have  better understand on these company, don’t forget other then hardware specification and software compatible, what most of the user concern is the level of support.

So what happen is i saw webbynode email about their service going live soon bla bla bla , so i just tweet it in my twitter.

during that time i hanven’t follow webbynode’s twitter account yet and after a while i getting some message.

Just base on my twitter, i think they did a search and found out that they send me the beta invite some time already and give me a personalized reply. I think this is really good plus point, in the end after testing the vps , i did sign up their VIP account, partially is because what they did give me a very good impression.

I try to activate my beta account, thanks that they didn’t remove inactivate user,my beta activation is still working. The interface give me a very good first impression, it is clean, simple and straigh foward. Their slogan is Cloud Computing for Developer , which is very clear who they are aiming for. I can’t really comment on the hardware/infrastructure part , since i m not really good on these, hopefully hostingfu will write something on these.

From a user/developer view webbynode is ideal for develoepr like me, i doing web development but not really good in linux server admin, they have a feature call ReadyStacks which allow the user setup the vps with GUI.Let’s say now i have a php project, i just using the interface create a LAMP stack, the stack will up and running within 5~10 min, currently there are ReadyStacks for LAMP, Django and Rails. Browsing through the forum , there are some interesting combination of stack has been discuss.

• Documentation – in term of documentation,linode have a wiki with some of the basic information but slicehost has lots of step by step and complete documentation , that is one of major reason as a web server admin newbie, i try out slicehost first. slicehost 1 : linode 0
• Value of money – slicehost cheapest plan is $2p for 256MB RAM disk space, 10G and 100G bandwidth, linode cheapest plan is $20 also but with 360MB RAM, 12GB disk space and 200G bandwidth. slicehost 1 : linode 1
• Datacenter – before this slicehost only have one choice which is St. Louis , where linode have 4 data center for you to choose . slicehost 1 : linode 2

But slicehost just make an announcement yesterday, the new member will be place at Rackspace Dallas datacenter, Woo Hoo! a new choice of datacenter for user ! slicehost make a good strike and score another point.

I will still follow my original plan and give linode a try but i think i will try a slice on the new dallas dc too.
