1. When you do local development, you want your dev.local pointing to one of the development folder, you need to create a virtual domain and make it point to your own system and setup the Apache virtual host pointing to the correct folder.
2. You just change the domain name DNS  , the propagation is still on the way , you can change it on your host file to instruct the system to send any request to this domain to the new ip, this allow you to continue setup the new site while waiting for the propagation to complete.

On a Mac , we just use the root login and edit the host file, it sound ok if you just need to do it once in a while, but if you often need to make lots of changes, it seem like a bit tedious. So this is one script that I learn from setup LAMP on Snow Leopard , using Ghost to manage the hostname.

You can install this script/utility by just one line command on your terminal app.

the command line for this script is quite simple and straightforward.

• ghost add
• ghost delete <hostname>
• ghost list

using this script you can set up multiple virtual hostname fast and easy to change, this should help to speed your development.

The first time i heard about them is because @FireHost added me on twitter, but during that time might be because i tweet some hosting related issue on my twitter, that’s why quite a few hosting twitter account added me. The Second time i heard about FireHost are still from twitter, but this time someone mention FireHost have a very interesting website.

What make FireHost website so interesting ? it should be the starting animation on the website, personally i think this idea are quite interesting, having “marvel” feel. Other then the interesting website, they have an interesting blog too, this is the second corporate blog that impress me, the first one will be pingdom official blog.

lastly about pricing , for my current stage , i don’t think i m able to afford their pricing, but if they are really that good in security, that pricing is consider reasonable , share with me if you have testimonial on FireHost.

I try to activate my beta account, thanks that they didn’t remove inactivate user,my beta activation is still working. The interface give me a very good first impression, it is clean, simple and straigh foward. Their slogan is Cloud Computing for Developer , which is very clear who they are aiming for. I can’t really comment on the hardware/infrastructure part , since i m not really good on these, hopefully hostingfu will write something on these.

From a user/developer view webbynode is ideal for develoepr like me, i doing web development but not really good in linux server admin, they have a feature call ReadyStacks which allow the user setup the vps with GUI.Let’s say now i have a php project, i just using the interface create a LAMP stack, the stack will up and running within 5~10 min, currently there are ReadyStacks for LAMP, Django and Rails. Browsing through the forum , there are some interesting combination of stack has been discuss.

If you are a ruby developer that work on ruby on rails or a python developer that work on django, webfaction will be one of best share hosting choice for you, but if you just like me which is more toward to PHP application, you might need to consider. So far i having 2 issue at webfaction , one is i got time out some time which been explain is because the php script execute longer then the permit time, another issue is that eaccelator is not installed.

The Last good thing that i want to mention about this host , is their customize control panel , which split the site into 3 part, the application, the domain and the web site, the application is where put your application, the domain is where you control what domain you have, what subdomain you want to create and the last part the web site is which domain connect to which application.The benefit of this structure is , you can have 1 code base ( application ) and pointing by different domain, a multi site structure can be done easily.

Anyway i m looking for another host which is focus on php , maybe a litespeed host , so that my webfaction account can be my dev account and as a backup for my php accont.

Two day ago my vps was down due to mysql insufficient memory , i believe it happen because mysql is bacup and rsync to my webfaction account, but this remind me of consolidate my host this idea again.

My current idea is move all the site to my webfaction account cancel my knownhost account and getting a linode vps. So that i can use the linode vps to do backup and playing with the setting.There are few reason to make me plan like this.

Save $$ – currently i m paying USD$31.50 for the vps , if i get a linode vps is about $USD20, cutting some cost.But the amont differenence is for the control panel and server admin support, i will talk about control panel on next point, but the support is really good at knownhost, which really making this a tough decision.

Control Panel – i using directadmin on vps , which is a lightweight control panel, but it seem like the feature is quite limited, example for addon domain ( pointing different domain to a same path ) or wild card dns ( whatever subdomain you type, will be all redirect to same domain) need a lot of hard code to be done and the control panel realy redundant.In the other side webfaction custom panel seem like able to solve all these problem in a easy way.

barebone vps – i been thinking to get a bareabone vps from either linode or slicehost, these vps are developer friendly, i can just reinstall any linux distro in the control panel and learn to configure it to suit my need

resource – base on the way i m using, i believe i might reach limit of my current vps soon and i think i might need to spend more $$ on it to get a more resouce package.

consolidate script – currently mainly on my vps is drupal and wordpress, if i using webfaction control panel , i might be able to consolidate everything, so that i have 1 drupal instance and 1 wordpress instance, it will be easier for me to maintain and upgrade.

• mediatemple – ultra resource hosting account, seem lots of down time , using for backup of my vps, cost USD $17
• total USD $48.50 per month

yeah, this is how much i spend on hosting each month, which is about $66 SGD, it’s consider quite a lot if i put in measurement the storage n bandwidth i been using, this is really under utilize , so it’s time to cut down and consolidate again.

Closing down my mediatemple account, the whole Grid service is really sounds awesome, if the downtime not that often, anyway currently i m consider webfaction, it seem good to me, it have rails, django and subversion, the price is low ,getting one for multi purpose include backup should be ok.

I been thinking to get either linode or slicehost as a vps for development, or if is better i can use it to replace my knownhost vps, i m still struggle on this, manage or not manage ? this is always my pain.

Hmmmmmm looking at some sg web hosting too, one of the project i would like to launch is target local, i might need a local hosting for that .. argh, how to balance this !

geez i almost change a host every month some are vps , some are reseller account but i still prefer a directadmin vps, at first thinking to go back wiredtree, since i have very good impression on their support, but still feel that cpanel is not my cup of tea and the new vps i getting will have better spec compare to the same account that i pay to wiredtree.

my new host is Rockmyweb , so far seem like a new company, but they getting some nice comment on webhostingtalk. let me review it again 3month later, i hope this should be ending of my host moving.

• lower ping compare to my prev host
• bigger space and bandwidth compare to my prev host
• seem developer friendly
• support ruby, django etc
• no oversell ( although they give bigger space and bandwidth, but they control domain that you can host )

Looking a host that support all the latest tools ? be it Rails, Django, TurboGears, Trac/Subversion , i would highly recommend them, if you looking for Django or TruboGears support hosting, lots of these related topic has been discussed in their forum. One of the unique feature is the are “Max total RAM used by long-running processes”

What Wiredtree offer is pretty simple, managed cpanel vps and managed cpanel dedicated.

I ordered the 256MB VPS to give this famous cpanel hosting a try, if you take a look webhostingtalk forum , you can see that quite a lot of people actually recommend Wiredtree , most of the people satisfied with their support and not to forget their plan include server hardening

For my experience, the setup is pretty fast and they will give you a call to verify, imagine they actually call to singapore to verify , woooooo not many host do that. Other then this i quite like their custom client login, which allow you to do dns setting, sending support ticket, checking account bandwidth usage. Not to forget the server hardening , once they ready your vps, they already apply all the security hardening, which is a plus point compare to some of the host which still require you to send them an email and get them to secure the server.

since their service is quite top notch, their pricing is slightly higher compare to others, but the effort they put in for sure is worth the extra dollar you put in, the only draw back is they don’t have return policy, my project has been cancel last minute, thats why i need to cancel the hosting with them without getting back any single cent.
