I m using lesser web services / web apps compare to the past few year and it seem like I will be much more prefer web services that using application as interface or it just work without much configuration. These are the web applications / web services that I m still using during 2011.

  • Gmail – using to manage all my email , even my own domain, I will be just use the Google Apps to host my own emails, I been using iPhone Mail and Sparrow to check my Gmails.
  • Google Calendar – using to manage all my appointment, it sync with my iPhone ical my iMac ical.
  • Dropxbox – One of the best Cloud Storage services and it help me a lot for my freelance work.
  • Evernote – One of the best notes that live in the Cloud, you can access it through multi platform and multi device is one of the selling point.
  • Remember The Milk – My todo list services for the past few year, the iPhone version is good and the iPad version is better and don’t forget most of premium to do list is charging for the sync, why not just get a services instead of an application.
  • Pinboard – I believe this is one of the web services that I can only access it through web browser, it still serve me well for me to bookmark resources.

As you can see most of the choice remain the same like last year, I belive I have moving from Goole era which using everything through the Browser  to access all kind of web application in the cloud – to the Apple era , where using all the device  with apps to access the Cloud.

This might be the reason other than web development , I would like to give iOS development a try.

Lot’s of user I know now day don’t host up email services for their own domain on their own server, because of few things:

  • It take some resources to run full suite email services , if you having a small VPS, you don’t want to waste the resources on this.
  • If you have email serves to prevent spam , you most likely need to install spam fighting service , this going to take some resources again.
  • There quite a few email services in the market which working well with hosting control panel, but if you has used Gmail for some time, you might prepare the Gmail UI then those email services.

So what’s the solutions for these user ? using the Google Apps Free. Without spending single cent, you are allowed to host your domain email services on Google for up to 50 users, this is pretty much for some of SME/Freelancers and don’t some of the added services like Google Calendar and Google Sites which you can use between your domain users.

But sadly I just got an email from Google Apps Team few day ago , they going to change the user limit for free account, from 50 users to 10 users , but this doesn’t apply the existing Google Apps users which register before 10th May 2011.

So If you still considering Google Apps Free , register now before 10th May 20011 or else you might just need to subscribe to Google Apps Business a bit earlier.

I have this love-hate relation with Gmail , on one side  it has serve me well for the past few day , one of my best email client experience, on the other side I been having some email technical problem recently , asking around how to solve it and I just find out is all because of Gmail.

So I having this project recently which need to convert a Codeigniter based site from using the mail library class to Amazon AWS SES ( Simple Mail Service) , so I converted Joelcox’s SES library to fit in the project.

During the testing phase, the bcc feature  seem like not working ? How my email setup is I have a developer email which will forward all the emails to my main Gmail account, so I try to send the email to my self and bcc to my developer email account, but instead of 2 email I only receive one email.

So after multiple testing and asking in the Amazon forum, the forum moderator has confirm the BCC feature is working perfectly fine and checking on my message id , they confirm my email has been deliver fine.

So what are the problem ? It seem like Gmail will just filter out the email , although all my developer account’s email should forward to my Gmail account, but it seem like the system will filter out the same content email to avoid duplication , so my developer account receive  the bcc email but never forward to my main Gmail account.

Developer tips :  if you need to test email , cc  or bcc feature , try to test it with different email service provider to avoid stuck in the same problem like me.

Sparrow is one of the latest Email client for Mac that everyone is talking about, since so many people talking about it , I have just download it and give it  a try.

My first impression after install finish Sparrow and launch , this is just like Tweetie , one of the famous twitter client that bought over by Twitter.

Sparrow - The New Mail For Mac

after playing around for a while, I would say it is very minimalist style email client, but it lack of priority inbox feature is really difficult to win the web user over. P/s some of my twitter mate mention that Sparrow taking up too much CPU cycle but the Sparrow team reply that they are trying to resolve this issue.

If you looking for a simple and stylish email client and haven’t get the priority inbox feature , give it a try on Sparrow.

I always heard about how people using Greasemonkey on firefox to create a different UI experience, but i never really give it a try, simply because sometime is too troublesome ( you got to install the Greasemonkey addon first, then follow by different purpose of Greasemonkey script ..)

Lifehacker has release a Better Gmail extension which suitable for us this kind of lazybug, it is a all in one extension, which install one adon and everything is there. Some of the feature which i like is

  • Conversation Preview – allow you to preview what is this email about, before you click on it to read
  • filter assistant – allow you to base on an email criteria to do filtering
  • Saved Search -you can save a searching criteria (just like Remember The Milk Smart List), there aresome pre-set Saved Search example TO-DO is for all the email that you haven’t read
  • Unlabelled – this is nice, which allow me to select all the email that haven’t label so that i can do some sorting

Better Gmail

there is a theme call Super Clean which build in this extension, which i don’t really like it, maybe is just my taste, i still prefer the gmail’s original theme. If you are gmail heavy usage user , maybe you should give this a try.

In case you know already, don’t beat me pls ..

Now i just know that all the email that appear in your gmail account is by default label with the tag “inbox” , so after you check your email in inbox folder, you should just select those read email and click on Archive, what Archive do is remoe the inbox tag.

So now your read email will be remove the inbox tag already, your inbox folder will be always clean, when you need find certain email, you can just check on the All Mail folder, is the same teory like using outlook express, your inbox should be always empty.

p/s i wonder anyone using the star feature ? just found that i never use before …
