So beginning of 2015, I was thinking why not we migrate over to Basecamp ? it’s one of the famous project management tools and the copy writing on the site is really convincing and I always heard that good thing about it on twitter, so I make a huge mistake without more testing, I want to migrate everything over to Basecamp.

When I migrate or copy paste everything from Asana , I feel excited at the beginning with all the fancy interface, but after running through 1 project on it, I reliase it doesn’t really suit us and the huge mistake is without proper testing through, I was the effort and do all the migration.

So what are the things I don’t like about Basecamp and rather stay with Asana ? Basecamp is rather a discussion oriented project management , while Asana is more a task oriented project management.

In Basecamp, everything is attach with discussion, every file, task, event all are come with discussion, so it is very conversation based, I for one a person that feel the whole things very messy when too much conversation flowing around , which is why when I run fully a project on it , I feel so messy, like the are so many discussion need to do be done and so many conversation flying around.

While in Asana , everything is task , task and task. if there is something need to discuss , just write it under the task , overview we are still looking at task, rather than focus on those conversation, which I find it really neat and more into it.

Yup, just this little thing make me turning back to Asana, but the take home lesson is, run some actual data on the web services you planning to migrate over, rather just based on all the buzz.

Current I use Interstate for one of my freelance project , I embedded the roadmaps in the CMS that I build for the clients, I just need to update the roadmaps and the client will be able to see and monitor the progress of the projects, I guess Interstate does hit one of the sweet spot.

I going to share about 8 features I love about Interstate , give it a try now if this post convince you , current Interstate is still free and the startup behind it has just get accepted by Ycombinator.

1. I love the activity tabs with project status , you can see on the overview activity screen, each project task group ( they call it route ) progress , from 30% to 50% because of what , from nearly complete become 50% complete due to new added task etc.

2. When you check on the project page , a percentage of the progress is displaying, this allow you monitor each feature/module progress in one glance.

3. External Viewing short link, there will be a short link generate for each roadmap and you can share it with your friend or your users.

4. You can customize the external viewing page also, you can add welcome message, home page url , support url and even you google analytics tracker to track the traffic of your roadmaps.

5. Customize who are involved in the project and who can view the roadmap, it allow you to include the activity or not.

6. Embed feature , just like how I use for my freelance project, you can embed your roadmaps on any pages with just a few line of java script and there are 2 themes for you to choose. This allow user to display the roadmap within their site without any programming language knowledge.

7. 3rd party services support , for now it support twitter and Github, which allow you to tie your Github commit with the progress, hopefully we can see this appear on more code repo services.

8. There is API available for developer.

I would say if I have the spare time now, most likely I will build something base on their API, it has been my top priority, but I guess most likely it gonna happen after august, hopefully there are more interesting feature upcoming for Interstate.

What is Wedoist ?

Think about Todoist with Team collaboration feature and added project management feature.

Wedoist allow you to manage your project in very simple way by 2 things , the status and task, there will be rivers of status and task, which allow you and your team collaborate on projects, when you having a status like ” how should i design the user interface for sign-up page” , your team-mate can just comment on it to give you some ideas. When your team-mate complete a task , you can see it and follow-up.

Other then the status and task , Wedoist is having group live chat feature, I haven’t try it yet in the process flow but I guess this feature come in handy when you trying to discuss with your team mate who to assign the task on the fly.

Email Digest seem like a standard thing in the latest web applications , there is this Daily Digest feature on Wedoist which alert you about activities of each projects. It will send you 8am in the morning , if there is activity happen previous day.

Price ? Free

Wedoist adopt the freemium business model just like Todoist , you only pay when you need something added , out of the basic service. For Wedoist , you can just upgrade to the Pro Account for $5 per month , in return of  5GB of the file storage  and change the style with your own logos and colors.

How you can make use of the file storage ? when you create a task , you can create with attachment, let’s say you can attach a screenshot  to get the developer fixed some bug on IE browser ?

There are no restriction on users, tasks and lists for both Free and Pro account. It sounds like a good deal to me.

Things to improve

Since it just launch not long ago, there are some thing to improve.

• a consolidate dashboard to show everything from different project
• a calendar
• allow to set the timing of digest email

Bantam live is like create a smaller facebook for you and your company colleague and management the project with activity stream, example you can upgrade your status so that your colleague know what you are doing ? ( imagine Yammer or Twitter ) then you can create event or task , all these info will be list on your activity stream and the person that you assign to. Other then these standard feature, Bantam live include CRM feature that can show which project your company working on related to which contact ( of course you can leave some comments on this contact, so that your colleague that handle this project know what to avoid ).

Personally i like this idea , the rest is really depends on how they marketing this product,base on compete’s data it seem like after the techcrunch’s post , their traffic is going back to normal, we will see how they going to hit the sweet spot again.
