I had to look elsewhere when I was looking for better themes and those tend to be sponsored themes, which they won't allow on the theme directory. I think sites like <a href="http://new-wordpress-themes.net" rel="nofollow">New Wordpress Themes</a> dot net will still provide a good service of weeding out the great themes and sharing them with the community of .org users. I doubt there would be any premium themes though for every uploaded theme has to be GPL Compatible. And if memory serves me right, Matt was very much against premium themes that he stripped all of it in the theme directory in the past.
