It’s a bit too late to say this ” Goodbye Google Reader” , thanks for the services for the past 8 year, it should be one of the longest web services I using other than email.

I always believe I start to know more and learn more after I find out what is RSS and thanks for Google provide this wonderful services that allow me to getting all these news update easily. Just like most of the user, I don’t understand what’s the factor Google choose to close down this service, but I believe  as closing down this service, it allow the RSS/Feed market to start innovate again.

I believe we saw quite a number of alternative raise for the past few month and lots of apps has been pop up non stop , there are lots of app release update to support all the new feed service, it’s been a while we see so much happening in the RSS field.

For my self , I been tried out Feedly for a while but don’t really happy with it and currently I m testing on Feedbin, as a developer I believe some of the service you need to paid , don’t be the free user. I m waiting for the Mac and iPad version of Reeder upgrade to support Feedbin as well, thanks for release the iPhone version for free, so far I really like it.

I just went to a Google event yesterday , it’s a bit weird to went there as a freelance developer , is not like the old day where I have to responsible for analysis the site but I guess I m still pretty much interested on site analytics and would like to find out more about the new Google Analytics.

So I learn about the new Google Analytics v5 , which I been using since the beta release , there are a few interesting features, just list down some of important things in the event.

  • Tracking campaign variable – allow you to keep track of different source with different tagging, I use similar setup before on Omniture.
  • Mobile Measurement – there is this new section on Overview which allow you to understand more about the mobile visitor on your site
  • Social Measurement –  I thought this will be auto too but it seem like only Google + is auto , the rest of social apps need some JavaScript call to trigger, but in a way you can customize and tag all the social actions on your site.
  • Google Insight Search and Google Ad planner can let you understand more about what user searching for and what you can focus on to get more visitor.
  • Using Google Site Optimizer to do A/B testing.
  • Multi-Channel Funnels is really cool that you can find out all the pre action before the last click.
  • Page speed has been highlight and the faster your site the better conversion rate you will be getting.

That’s pretty much info I m getting through this event , there are a few thing I would like to experiment on this blog, but one idea actually strike through during the event , what If I build a landing page services that make use of these Google Products ? will it be able to sell ?

Lot’s of user I know now day don’t host up email services for their own domain on their own server, because of few things:

  • It take some resources to run full suite email services , if you having a small VPS, you don’t want to waste the resources on this.
  • If you have email serves to prevent spam , you most likely need to install spam fighting service , this going to take some resources again.
  • There quite a few email services in the market which working well with hosting control panel, but if you has used Gmail for some time, you might prepare the Gmail UI then those email services.

So what’s the solutions for these user ? using the Google Apps Free. Without spending single cent, you are allowed to host your domain email services on Google for up to 50 users, this is pretty much for some of SME/Freelancers and don’t some of the added services like Google Calendar and Google Sites which you can use between your domain users.

But sadly I just got an email from Google Apps Team few day ago , they going to change the user limit for free account, from 50 users to 10 users , but this doesn’t apply the existing Google Apps users which register before 10th May 2011.

So If you still considering Google Apps Free , register now before 10th May 20011 or else you might just need to subscribe to Google Apps Business a bit earlier.

I just attend my first Google event last friday , the Google DevFest Singapore. This is my second geek event this year , I am looking forward for this , I will blog about the different between this 2 geek event on my next post, this post will be just summarize the DevFest only.

The event kick start with Google Maps API by Daniels Lee , the poor guy was coughing during the presentation.

After Google Maps API presentation and 10 min break , the next HTML5 presentation done by Jeremy Orlow.

Interesting HTML5 presentation end with no FAQ session due to time constraint, follow up is a 2-Person presentation by Timothy Jordan (@timothyjordan) and Bob Aman (@sporkmonger) on Google Buzz API.

  • Google Buzz API Presentation – not just about Google Buzz , Timothy actually talk about how the social work , oauth and activity streams too.

After the buzz buzz , lunch time started with some boring lunch box, there is this guy approach me when I queue up for Starbuck, we just have a short chat on what we think about the event so far, but I m a bit shy on these kind of social thing , after my coffee ready and I just make a move first, sorry pal.

The presentation continue once every one come back from back from lunch, it start with Jeremy Orlow again on Google Chrome Developer Tools, I would say this is really an eye opener and I really understand why firebug never migrate over to Chrome, because Chrome itself already contain a very powerful debugging tools , the only thing I wish will be edit the style sheet and you can see it on the fly ( now every changes you need to enter ). I can’t really find the presentation for this but I think the pdf on Google IO is quite good enough

Patrick Chanezon (@chanezon) is the last presenter, He cover lot of topics in his presentation which share on slideshare. These are the topics which cover by Patrick.

  • Google Apps – the one allow you use Gmail and other google service for your own domain.
  • Google Apps Marketplace – a market place that allow developer selling their application/service that tie to Google service

2 company pitched when Patrick talking about Google Apps Marketplace.

Patrick continue his presentation on some other new Google product.

The last part of the day is the Code Lab session

This pretty much include all the links for devfest and there is this last link, @stephliu is asking for feedback for Google Devfest SG , please provide them feedback to improve the next event. Please leave a comment if I miss out any links.

I blog about Google reader getting some new feature before and it seem like now Google Reader is getting more social feature added , the latest added feature is allow user to send any feeds that you currently reading to other web2.0 services.

If you didn’t see the send to feature while reading your feed, you just need to configure it on Setting -> Send to , check the web2.0 services that you would like the feed send to , as you can see on the thumbnail , there are quite a lot services supported , including instapaper and posterous.

google-reader-send-to

overall i think this is a good changes, at least now the users no need to install Greasemonkey script for sending the feed to their favourite web2.0 services, i wonder what will be the next social feature adding to Google Reader ?

I blog about Google Task and how it integrate with Google calendar, this interesting feature finally become an official product, Google just mention Tasks graduates from Gmail Labs . Although Google Task is from Gmails Labs , but i think it more like a standalone product, it allow to integrated with some other Google product which make it more interesting.

  1. Integrate with Gmail – it will be like Google chat windows, display at the right hand corner for you to create task, if you don’t like it you can show it as pop up too.google-task-gmail
  2. Integrate with Mobile – tested on ipod touch and windows mobile phone, as usual it looks perfect on mac and looks sux on windows.I only hope that there are native apps appear in app store google-task-iphone
  3. Integrate with Calendar – This really help for Google Calendar’s user, at least we can just concentrate to manage everything on the calendar view. google-task-calendar
  4. Integrate with iGoogle – This widget support allow user to manage their task on iGoogle, too bad it seem like other dashboard like netvibes still don’t have any module to support this. google-task-igoogle

I might give Google Task a full try to see does it able to replace my Remember The Milk, lets see how this will work.

It seem like no one can do it like Google , make use of Labs feature and improve their own product, lots of wonderful product are graduate from Google Labs and there are individual Labs for some of the product, a good example that getting lots of positive feedback should be Gmail Labs, which allow user to try out the new gmail feature. Google Calendar is follow Gmail footstep and introduce Google Calendar Labs.

google-calendar-labs

So what this lab does is testing new feature with the users that optin, which mean the new feature won’t be affect the normal usage while gather some of the google fans feedback, until the product is popular enough , then it will become part of official product. The Google Calendar Labs currently having 6 features for user to try out, i believe we should see some interesting discover from this lab soon.
