I think this is a good news for most of the Facebook Developer, Heroku partner with Facebook , you can now connect your Facebook Apps with cloud services by just a few click, save all the trouble to set up a VPS/Dedicated server, just focus on the development. At the same time this is a good news for PHP Developer, finally Heroku is support PHP.

There been a few PAAS (platform as a service) launched recently that support PHP, most of them are inspired by Heroku , before this happen , everyone is asking where can we find a Heroku for PHP ? Heroku reply with PHP support , although it seem like a bit late , but late better than never happen. The only thing I wonder how does the web dyno and worker dyno affect PHP application.

I will be going through some of the steps to set up Heroku for your Facebook Applications.  First you need to create your own Facebook Application on the developer page.

Once you created your application, you should see there is a Cloud Service area, click on the Get Started button.

Heroku will be showing up as the only provider, but I suspect the rest of PAAS will be joining soon ?

Then choose the Environment you prefer , now there are 4 enviroment support by Heroku.

Next, the apps will be ready , your Heroku account will be created base on your Facebook email, if you are Heroku existing customer , it will just link to your Heroku account, then it will prompt a standard application access permission dialog, allow it and you will see a sample apps ready.

So the cloud service is up and running ? next we need to get access to the source code to build our Facebook Application, download the Heroku toolkit , using the toolkit to login and upload your public key and git clone your application for local development.

What’s the first thing pop in your mind once you find out Heroku support PHP ? Get WordPress running on it and it seem like there are people doing so already.

This answer one of the question that i been asking my friends which playing lots of Facebook game, will you pay anything for these Facebook game ? almost all my friends give me a big “NO” (although there are one female friend that actually want to pay to buy a cow in country story) , this make me wonder if there are not many user willing to pay, how come some of these company actually earn $250 million a year ?

after reading through all the scamville info, now i understand how some of these social gaming company earning money and this is quite disturbing. If you still remember Facebook recently release Facebook developer roadmap , one of the major changes is allow application developer to gain permission for accessing user’s email address, which is another primary source of scam/spam. I believe this scamville issue most likely will be generate a lot of discussions and i just wonder will Facebook actually delay this email permission changes or will Facebook actually put in more control on this?

There are quite a few news about the Facebook applications recently , other then new application directory release and first verified applications announced , what i want to talk about is the application about page updated.

Just some background update , if you create an application in Facebook, it will auto create an about page for your application, this act like a fan page for your application where you can discuss, review or comment about application, this look ok during the old time before fan page upgrade to public profile.

During March Facebook upgrade the fan page to the new publci profile with tons of new features , but leave out the upgrade for application about page, it makes about page looks useless and meaningless compare to the new shiny Public Profile( it change the name from fan page to public profile) , i even try to ask in forum before , but didn’t getting any answer when will the about page getting upgrade ?

You might ask why is this upgrade important ? the answer is simple “Facebook Connect”. when you create Facebook connect for a web site , you need to create an application in Facebook and the old about page doesn’t really looks good, as another entry for your application or as another content distrubute for your website that connect through Facebook , public profile seem like a better choice. So you got 2 option

  1. Create another Public Profile to represent your website in Facebook and hide your Facebook Connect application about page.
  2. Using your Facebook Connect application about page and wait for the upgrade.

I can only select option 1 , since i need to launch both Facebook Connect and Facebook Fan Page together. After 1 week the project launch, Facebook launch the upgrade for application about page, sigh. I really wish that Facebook giving option for you to select a public profile to link with your application, this going to help a lot of early adopters.

side node : currently i m using the facebook connect apps to update status to the fan page, doing feed story is still ok, if you doing status update, it will show “via [application about page]” … now you see the problem ?
