Flock is EOL , Rockmelt next ?

I blog about Flock 5 years ago when it launch , but today Flock announce it will discontinued as of April 26th, 2011 , They have encourage their users to migrate over to Firefox or Chrome.

Flock started with Firefox Engine and last year they release a beta which migrate over to use Chromium engine, but it seem like this doesn’t help much.

Since Flock is closing down , it remind me another social browser – Rockmelt , the browser that deeply integrated with Facebook, will it happen to have the same fate ?

I was wondering if Flock started as plugin, will it be better ?

Firefox 4 Released

I guess this is a bit late , but Mozilla has announced the official launch of Firefox 4 , this will be an excited news for all the Firefox out there , you can get it here , check out their official announcement for all the shiny new feature of Firefox 4.

Every major version release, Firefox will have some download counter/download stat kind of landing page , there are no exception this time, check it out. I wonder is it going to break record again ?

So far for myself , I used to be Firefox’s Fan until Google Chrome version 6, then I have switch over to Chrome. For now I have Firefox 4 RC installed for some time, but I will only call out my Firefox to the rescue, when Google Chrome is having some problem with some of the site. I just check on my Google Analytics on the “Browser usage breakdown” for this blog and Firefox user just love this blog , haha.

Since there are so many Firefox user support this blog, let me clear my work this week and do some preparation, next week will be Firefox week , I will be using Firefox for one whole week without Google Chrome and blog about my return experience of Firefox 4.

How Rockmelt Invite system rock

I blog about Rockmelt last week , I feel like mention about how their beta invitation works, which I find it very interesting and really make use of Facebook social graph.

So how does Rockmelt invite mechanism works ?

First you will need to launch the Facebook Connect on the Rockmelt official site.
After you using Facebook Connect to authenticate yourself, Rockmelt will keep a record of you.
At the same time your Facebook friend which are using Rockmelt will be notified that you wish to have an invite of Rockmelt.
Every user have 3 invites ( correct me if I m wrong ) , if your friend still having invites , they can choose to invite you through Rockmelt.
One of the catch is the invites you send will be refill if the users download Rockmelt and using it, if simply send to anyone that are not interested on this social browser, you just wasted your invites.

So which part rocks ?

Rockmelt using your friendship in Facebook, distribute their beta invites.
It’s about who you know, to get early access on Rockmelt.
The 3 invites limit make sure it won’t overload the servers.
The 3 invites refill mechanism make sure that the invites will only reach the users who really need it.

This is the right navigation on Rockmelt, it told you who has received your invite and download, how many invites you still have, who are the friends ask for invites and who are the friends is using Rockmelt.It’s been sometime to see a creative beta invite system like this, that’s why I think it really rock.

Rockmelt – the new social browser

I guess the biggest news this morning is about the early access of the new social browser – Rockmelt , if you have no idea who are the people behind this , Rockmelt is backed by the Netscape founder.

Rockmelt is build on top of Chromium , the open source version of Google Chrome, if Goole Chrome is your default browser and you are pretty much into Facebook, Rockmelt is for you. Rockmelt showing your friends list from Facebook on the left and social news on your right which include twitter and any rss feed that you add. On top of the navigation bar , you can update your status easily by clicking on your Facebook avatar or you can just share your current visit url by the share button, too bad the Facebook Like doesn’t included for this release , maybe combine the star button with like button will be a good idea ?

If you still remember there is another “social browser” in the market called Flock, I understand that Flock latest beta is using Chromium too , moving away from the Firefox based, but it seem like it doesn’t really getting much attention, what happen when the new social browser meet the old one ?

One of interesting thing is to get early access of Rockmelt , you need to sign up with your Facebook Account, according some user on Twitter , it seem like it will decided by your social influence to get your early access ?

Anyway thanks for @Cheeaun invite me for the early access, every user will have 3 invites to send and for sure you will invite your Facebook friends only, I guess this might be a new way to get beta invites in future ?

Fix missing favicon on IE7

I just fix a missing favicon problem in IE7 for my work few day ago, i would like to share how i fixed it after trying a few different solution. so the original code that i have on the site is

since i using firefox as my major development browser and this code display the favicon perfectly ok on firefox , i thought this is the correct way to using it ( ya i know by right i should check this againts cross browser ) until the users file a bug on this , the favicon is not showing on IE 7.

after some research on the web and doing some testing on the site , finally i found the solution , there are 2 thing i have miss out

IE7 have a bug to recognize favicon on relative path, that why the path for the icon must be aboslute path , which mean the ico image file with full domain.
there is a need to declare the mime type for favicon , which is the type="image/x-icon".

after this you might still not seeing the favicon appear on your IE , you need to clear your cache first and reload the site, the first time be slightly slower but it should be display the favicon after a while. Below is the image what favicon is , in case some of the reader don’t know.

Opera Unite strike back for opera

Since the launch/the release of Opera 10 beta last week, there’s news that Opera is going to reinvent the web this week. It just happened that when I read about Here’s what Opera is about to unveil this morning, the blog owner is suggesting a browser that come with embeded web server.

Although Kas Thomas ( the blog owner) claim that he doesn’t have any inside info , but what he guessed was correct and here come Opera Untie – a Web server on the Web browser. So what actually Opera Untie does? It actually enables our opera browser to act as a web server and by some configuration; you will be able to start up different services easily. Services such as

File sharing
Media streaming
Photo sharing
Place to leave note
Lounge to chit chat

I have tried configuring it and successfully chit chatting with some of my friends without any problem and I am able to leave notes on my friend’s Unite too. This is really cool.

We should expect to see lots of developments after this launch? It seems like you can just build something with html and javascript. I think this is a good strike back for Opera, which might really help Opera to regain their market share.

Trying out Adobe Browserlab

Just now there are quite a few people talking about adobe browserlab in my twitter stream, that’s why i register an account and give it a try.

Adobe Browserlab is just like one of developer’s favourite site – browsershots , it will show you the image of how the web site looks like under different browser on different OS, this is something important for web designer when design something cross browser.

Currently these are the provided browser + OS combination , you can create your own set for different purpose.

Too bad there are only 1up and 2up view only, but the onion view is something interesting which combine both view and let see you the difference.

I believe the whole service still beta testing, because the FF3 on windows and IE on windows has been generate for more then 20 min, but still no image to display, anyway this is quite interesting product , it will be better if the rendering can be faster.

Google Chrome Crossover Mac

Yeah, i think for sure there a quite a lot of user wish that Google Chrome coming to Mac or Linux, the guys over codeweavers have release the port over Chromium web browser free of charge.

I download it and test on my imac, the initial startup is a bit slow and it seem like it render website with ugly font. Other then this when my mouse is moving around the browser, it feel like a bit wierd, like a bit lagging.

anyway using not more then 10 min and i m getting this , port over for Mac? no thanks , i think i will wait for it release for mac.

Google Chrome Theme Effect

I think a lot of people had try the new browser by Google – Google Chrome , we can see there are a lot of post in the blogsphere talking abot this new browser, but what i going to share is something about the theme.

Other then some of the unique feature as a browser, another thing that Google Chrome getting a lot of attention is because the simple and clean theme and the theme effect has start to spread.

Geez , now i m thinking to port it over for habari.

If Browsers were women

Saw this image sometime ago, i think is quite interesting that relate woman and browser.

Yeah firefox is just like a hottie but sometime you just hate it ( when memory issue happen ) and seriously the addon that build on top is one of the main reason i can’t leave it. No comment on opera since i don’t really use it much. Safari and her ifriend is another interesting description, i m not aware of it until it been mention, think i think pay attention on my safari for this issue, but i must say safari is nice if it’s more open.

haha last the woman about IE .. yeah is easy to get infection even you prepare a few protection …
